Codec

From the perspective of communication engineering, a codec is typically an encoder/decoder. Codecs are used in integrated circuits or chips to convert analog video and audio signals into digital format. A codec can also convert received digital signals back into analog format. A codec uses both analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion on the same chip. The term codec can also refer to compression/decompression, which usually means an algorithm or computer program that reduces the size of large files and applications.
