What is a Video Encoder (Video Server)?

Many workplaces are already equipped with analog CCTV surveillance systems. Users can install a video server to transmit live images over the network. It works with existing equipment and transmits raw image data through a computer network.

Video servers (2400/2401) can use the built-in RS232/485 serial port at the back to control existing equipment, such as video recorders or PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras. Network video servers also have digital input and output functions. The input is used to trigger the server to start transmitting video. Servers with image buffer memory can send pre-event images. (Most network cameras also have these features.)

Video servers can also be connected to special cameras, such as ultra-high-resolution cameras, miniature cameras, or microscope cameras.

Network video servers are perfectly suited to enhance existing CCTV systems.

A video server includes one or more analog video input terminals, video digitization components, video compression components, and a web server with network/telephone modem interfaces. The video server digitizes the analog video source and transmits it over a computer network, effectively turning an analog camera into a network camera.

Traditionally, surveillance systems were built on analog CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) technology. A video server can connect legacy equipment and transmit source video over a computer network.

Using the built-in serial port, the video server can further control existing equipment, such as video recorders or PTZ cameras. Digital input terminals are often used to trigger the server to start transmitting video, and the server’s image buffer memory allows it to send pre-alarm images.

Video servers can also connect to special cameras, such as highly sensitive black-and-white cameras, miniature cameras, or microscope cameras.
